Chinese Shar Peis - General DescriptionChinese Shar-Peis have a very peculiar appearance. They are compact dogs of medium size. Their coat is harsh and loose, making them look so different from other dogs. These dogs also have a "hippopotamus like muzzle," a high set tail, and very small ears. Famous wrinkles cover the head, neck and body. Puppy Shar-Peis are wrinkled all over. However, this feature is limited to the head, neck and withers in the adult dog.The dog's head is rather large. The small deep-set eyes are dark and almond-shaped. Tiny ears are thick, triangular in shape and slightly rounded at the tips. The ears lie flat against the head of the dog. The muzzle is broad. The nose is large and dark. The Shar-Pei's tongue, the roof of the mouth, gums and flews are bluish-black. A pink tongue is a disqualification.
Shar-Peis come in a number of colors. Possible coat colors may include black, cream, red, fawn, apricot, sable, chocolate, blue and Isabella. The nose may be black or brick.
Chinese Shar Peis - TemperamentShar-Peis are loyal and wary of strangers. They are protective of their family. Their charm wins hearts. Shar-Peis are very intelligent dogs. They excel in obedience training. To maintain their interest, training sessions should be interesting. The usual disposition of a Shar-Pei is that of a bright, affectionate dog. The Shar-Pei is easily housetrained. These dogs are exceptionally clean and require minimal grooming. Shar-Peis bred by responsible breeders are temperamentally stable.
